Goals for Third Grade


Religion Know the Act of Contrition, Hail Holy Queen, the Acts of Faith, Hope and Love.      Know how to pray the Rosary and the Apostles's Creed.    Understand God’s plan for the Church, work, family and us. Know the Blessed Trinity and understand what it means to act as image of God. Know the Ten Connandments. Know the Sacraments.

Reading Strategies- comprehension, cause and effect, make inferencs, make generalizations compare and contrast,  sequence events, summarize point of view, fact and opinion, judgments and decisions, important and unimportant information.    
Vocabulary Strategies- synonyms and antonyms, multiple-meaning words, context clues, compound words, figurative language.
   Study Skills- identify and use parts of a book; use reference sources, graphic aids, various texts.
Phonics/Spelling   Learn synonyms and antonyms, words with multiple meanings, Use diagraphs, blends, dipthongs, syllables. Know root words, compound words, contractions. Understand long and short vowels, plurals, homophones and homographs. Handwriting DyNealian Cursive.






Grammar Sentences of  varying lengths and the punctuation of all types of sentences.     Nouns – common, proper, singular, plural, possessive.     Pronouns – Pronouns used as subjects and objects, pronoun – agreement, possessive pronouns. Verbs – subject-verb agreement, main and helping verbs; past/future tense.     Adjectives – adjectives that compare, tell how many,  articles  Adverbs – to describe verbs, adjectives and other adverbs.     Mechanics – capitalization, punctuation, quotations, commas, contractions and apostrophes.  Math   Estimate numbers to 1,000,000,000. Memorize addictions and subtractions facts, insert missing addends and signs. Add and subtract two, three and four digit umbers with regrouping. Write and recite and learn multiple facts through 12. Understand and perform basic division. Know and label, halves, thirds and fourths.     Measure temperature using Celsius and Fahrenheit.     Add, subtract and estimate the value of money up to $100. Be able to tell time to the nearest minute and solve word problems.     Measure to the nearest foot, yard and mile and solve word problems.   Measure to the nearest meter, millimeter and centimeter and solve word problems.     Measure liquids in cups, ounces, pints, quarts, gallons, millimeters, liters and estimate volume.     Identify two and three dimensional shapes. 
                                           

Science  Basic unsderstadking of the solar system. Describe cloud formations, storms and various forms of weather. Understand the water cycle. Identify changes in the Earth's surface. Describe materials found on the Earth. Relate how matter changes. Understanding energy and its uses in the environment. Make predictions using hypothesis.

Social Studies Describe Native American Nations. Understand how the Northeast and West were settled. Describe the beginning of prairie towns. Know the importance of taking care of the land and the importance of conserving natural resources. Understand how industries develope. Understand the role of  government in our nation, state, and community. Understand cultures from around the world.  Gain understanding of map skills.
