 READING
.We read a story
called, Grandfather's
Journey by Allen Say, about
his
grandfather's immigration from Japan to America, his travels here, and
his return to Japan. Many people immigrate to America every day. From
1892 to the mid 1900's people would pass through Ellis Island in New
York City Harbor to be checked out before they were allowed to enter
the United States. The immigrants were greeted by the Statue of Liberty
as they entered the harbor. Over 40 percent of Americans can trace
their heritage to Ellis Island.

..."Give
me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
