To The News from
Mrs. Hughes
_________________________________________________________________
There
is a lot planned for this month. The
studies in religion will include the
the sacraments and learning
five Bible
verses that
can be found under
the sacraments and learning
five Bible
verses that
can be found under the month of August monthly news.
We'll made our own
flashcards for the eight times tables . I’m aiming
at memorization of the tables through nines by the end of
January. Our
math
study will include regrouping in addition
and subtraction.
We started our study of
weather before
Christmas. Small cooperative groups will study and present parts
of the chapter. All materials will be supplied. This
will be part of the science grade for second trimester. ‘Weather, You
Like It or Not’ is a play planned as a culminating activity. We’ll send
invitations soon!
The human
body is another
unit in science. We are studying the organs and making bodies with them.
The
children are
making good progress in reading. We begin the second reader this week,
as well as to begin Mr.
Popper’s Penguins.
I
would like each
child to keep a library book in his or
her desk. The other can go home
for enjoyment there. Encourage your
child to take tests for Reading Counts. More D.E.A.R. is planned
during during January. This month we will have "Flashlight
Fridays". The children may bring a
flashlights, small pillows and a
good books to read by flashlight.
Starting
this
trimester,
spelling tests will include one word from The
WeightyWord Book.
Each
word comes with a story to help remember the
meaning of the word. This word and the definition will appear in
the assignment books. This is not required. It’s for
students who want a challenge and is for extra credit.
The
writing process is: Discuss a topic with a classmate
to get ideas. Complete the First Steps Narrative
Plan to organize the details
of
your story using a graphic organizer. Share your Narrative plan with a
classmate. Revise/Add details to your
Narrative Plan based on suggestions
made
in Step 3. Write the rough draft of your
story.
Check the required elements sheet
to ensure all elements have
been
included.
Share your rough draft with a
classmate. Revise and edit your rough draft
with the classmate. Revise your story
with a parent. Have
your parents write a comment and sign their name(s).
Share your draft with the
classmate again.
Write the final/good copy of your story on form provided in class. Make the illustrations.
Make the title page.

How
would you rank how well you did
on his/her
SNOWMAN ADVENTURE STORY?
Return
your story to school and
place it
inthe blue bin. It will be added to your permanent writing file.
It
is important to note that the required elements for story writing
are
taught in class during the first month of school and re-taught
and
reinforced throughout the year. The number of required elements
increases as the year goes on and sometimes changes according to the
writing assignment. The writing process, however, does not change.
Teaching process writing in this manner is higghly effective.
They
had learned the components of a good story and to consistently
include different forms of punctuation, grammar etc. into most, if
not
all of their writing.
Sometimes, it's not what students know, but whether or not they put
it
down on paper!
With
this form of process writing, my students learn to put what
they
know down on paper!

did you do well when writing this
