Kite Days

by Mark Sawyer

A kite, a sky, and a good firm breeze,

And acres of ground away from trees,

And one hundred yards of clean, strong string --

O boy, O boy!  I call that Spring!

Children

Children are like kites, you spend a lifetime
trying to get them off the ground. you run
with them until you are both breathless.

When they crash you add a longer tail. They
hit a rooftop you pick them up and comfort
them. You watched them get picked up by the
wind. You assure them that they will someday
fly. Finally they are airborn.  They need more
string and you keep letting it out, with each
twist of the ball of twine. There is a
sadness that goes with the joy. As the kite
becomes more distant you somehow know that
the lifeline that held you together will
snap, to soar as it was meant to
soar......free and alone.
